Overcoming Fear Sermon Series: Fear - Facing the Physical

Understanding Fear

Fear is more than just an emotion; it is a physical and mental experience deeply rooted in the brain's functions.

The sensory cortex processes information from our five senses, helping us perceive threats, while the thalamus acts as the body's information relay, managing sensory data (except smell).

The hypothalamus regulates essential bodily functions like temperature and heart rate, producing hormones that trigger fear responses.

The amygdala serves as the emotional processing centre, activating our fight or flight instincts, while the hippocampus plays a key role in memory, converting short-term experiences into long-term memories that inform how we react to fear.

Together, these areas of the brain, along with neurons that transmit information between brain cells, shape how we perceive and react to fear physically and emotionally.

"The fear of YHWH is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy is understanding."
Proverbs 9:10

Battling Fear: A Biblical Example

Job knew fear intimately, and in Job 3:25-26, he speaks of his greatest fears coming true. He expresses a sense of helplessness, being at unrest, and filled with trouble. Despite fear, believers are called to trust God even when fear is overwhelming.

"For the thing which I greatly feared has come upon me, and what I dreaded has happened to me. I am not at ease, nor am I quiet; I have no rest, but trouble comes."
Job 3:25-26

Battle Through Belief: Overcoming Fear with Faith

In Psalm 27, David proclaims his trust in God despite fear. He declares that God is his light, salvation, and stronghold. Even though enemies surround him, his heart is confident in God's protection and provision. Believers are called to battle through fear by trusting in God’s presence and promises.

"The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"
Psalm 27:1

Seeking God's Face: A Call to Action

Psalm 27 also invites us to seek God’s face in moments of fear. David not only trusts in God’s protection but actively seeks His presence. He desires to dwell with God, to inquire in His temple, and to receive God's grace. Fear fades in the light of God’s presence.

You have said, ‘Seek my face.’ My heart says to you, ‘Your face, Lord, do I seek.’"
Psalm 27:8

Face Fear With Faith

Fear is a powerful force, but it is no match for faith in God. Through understanding where fear comes from, reflecting on biblical examples, and seeking God’s presence, we can overcome fear in our lives. Remember, fear can be faced and defeated through faith in God’s promises.
