Commitment Series: Loyalty

Loise Kock

Loyalty

Loyalty is often considered a lost virtue in today's world, where "cancel culture" prevails.

However, true loyalty is essential for building healthy communities and relationships.

The Hebrew word for loyalty, "Hesed," is often translated as "steadfast love" or "loving-kindness" in the Bible, reflecting God's character. Stories like Ruth's demonstrate the power of loyalty in transforming lives and communities.

"It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed."

Deuteronomy 31:8

"But Ruth said, 'Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the LORD do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.'"
Ruth 1:16-17

Loyalty in Action: The Story of Ruth

Ruth's story begins with tragedy but ends in restoration due to her loyalty to Naomi. Despite losing her husband and facing an uncertain future, Ruth chose to stay with Naomi, demonstrating steadfast love and commitment. Her loyalty led to unexpected blessings and favour, ultimately playing a crucial role in God's redemptive plan.

"But Boaz answered her, 'All that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband has been fully told to me, and how you left your father and mother and your native land and came to a people that you did not know before.
The LORD repay you for what you have done, and a full reward be given you by the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge!'"
Ruth 2:11-12

Loyalty and Trust in God

Trusting in God requires us to be loyal to His will and purposes, even when it is difficult. God's faithfulness is the ultimate example for us to follow. Despite human failures, God remains steadfast and true to His promises. Our loyalty to God should be reflected in our obedience and commitment to His word.

"It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes."
Psalm 118:8-9

Cultivating Loyalty in Relationships

Loyalty in relationships requires humility, patience, and a commitment to the well-being of others. It involves staying by someone's side through highs and lows, just as Ruth did with Naomi. In a world where relationships are often transient, cultivating loyalty can lead to deep, meaningful connections and mutual growth.

"So that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love."
Ephesians 4:14-16

The Power of Loyalty

Loyalty is a sign of maturity and a crucial aspect of Christian life. It enables us to build strong relationships, contribute to community well-being, and grow spiritually. By emulating God's steadfast love and faithfulness, we can bring restoration and positive change to those around us. True loyalty is marked by sacrificial giving and unwavering commitment to God's word and His people.

"All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the LORD. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word."
Isaiah 66:2
